Sculptural Elements: The Art of the Table Lamp

The humble table lamp. One of the most utilised items in the home, perhaps one of the most under-appreciated. In its simplest form, a lamp is simply there to illuminate. While it does that job well, can also be a crucial artistic feature in any room. It's an item we put a lot of thought into when purchasing, although it’s not always the first thing we think to incorporate when we realise our home is lacking something. But, then again, where would we be without the humble table lamp? Would we be sat in darkness, or would we sit in the glaring brightness of a ceiling lamp?

Neither is ideal, so this article will pay tribute to the iconic table lamp and how decorative lighting is an essential design element.

The Art Of The Table Lamp

The table lamp has a long and varied history that people perhaps don't know about, and it's a lot more than just the illumination you need on a cosy dark night. Some would say the table lamp was invented as early as 70,000 BCE, when people burned oil through the night (or until it ran out). The table lamp we use today came to fruition around 109 years ago when a man named George Carwardine - a British engineer - decided to quit his job and embark on a noble quest to bring the world a new light source.

Little did George know that his design would lead to the modern-day art of the table lamp. From vintage lamps to modern-day designs, there's no one fits all design – there are quite literally thousands of designs that each have their own character, shape, and ability to bring dimension to a room.

Arguably, the art of the table lamp began during the first half of the 20th century. Modernism was a massive concept, with the idea that form follows function dominating the design of objects, whether a lamp or a building. That was, however, until the 1920s and 30s, when the minimalism of modernism died out. Suddenly, the humble and rather basic table lamp began to undergo a facelift. Designers began to favour exquisite craftsmanship, eclectic, varied designs, and glamourous exclusivity - thus, table lamps became a work of art.

Beautiful and Unique Table Lamp Designs

The structural element of the table lamp defines the design. From sculptural double gourd designs to the rustic ribbed urn, they're far from the uniform and less than exciting designs they once were. Don't be afraid to steer away from the standard table lamp and go for a sculptural design. One that can actually catch the eye, rather than blend in the background.

Naturally, the best table lamp will be one that stands out from the rest of the room’s decor, and right now is the best time to have a structural and artistic makeover. 2023 sees the return of colours and patterns, so explore table lamps that bring that much-needed pop of colour and pattern – for instance, our Mustard Wiggle Ribbed ceramic lamp base.

Using Your Lamp To Create An Atmosphere

The art of the table lamp is as much about the atmosphere it can create as it is the actual design. Take note of the concept of Hygge and consider how you can position your lamp. The correct positioning will not only create a much-needed structural element in empty space, but can also turn that space into an inviting, soothing pocket of light that draws you in for the night.

The dim light itself can bring dimension to the room just as much as the structural design of the lamp - and a dim light is definitely the preferable option. Bright LED lights can create harsh pockets of light that are distracting and stimulating rather than relaxing and intimate.

Table Lamp Or Floor Lamp?

The big interior design debate - a table lamp, floor lamp, or both? Both bring their unique structural elements to a room. Table lamps are excellent because they're not reserved entirely for a table – you can place them on a bookshelf or shelf on the wall to create structure and light at multiple points in a room. A floor lamp provides that overhanging structure and less intrusive form of light that's perfect for the corner of any room. Neither is necessarily better, but both will deliver different structural elements, and it's essential to consider which one will suit your desires effortlessly.

Now, you might appreciate the power of the structural elements of the table lamp - it's simply a work of art that we can't live without in our homes. Whether it's a simple and sophisticated design or a unique, in-your-face one, a living room or bedroom isn't complete without a table lamp.
