Morrison Interiors Penny’s career as an internationally known interior designer began 30 years ago, as a result of developing houses in London and then undertaking projects for private clients, including boutique hotels in England and Saint Barthélemy, London town houses, listed country houses in England and Sweden, yachts in France and holiday houses in South Africa, France and the Caribbean. South African by birth, Penny is unbound by English tradition; her eclectic trade-mark style focuses on comfortable living, incorporating classical and contemporary elements to create elegant interiors which are individual and welcoming - a deliberate jumble of the old and the new, giving an unceremonious, almost eccentric atmosphere. “I use a mix of antique and modern furniture to create an interesting atmosphere, while focusing on comfort. Understanding each client’s requirements and lifestyle, and the style of their property is the starting point; I always like to incorporate the clients existing possessions.” Morrison Interiors has a complete Interior Design service, liaising with architects, builders, joiners and garden designers, creating furniture and lighting layouts, and all aspects of interiors such as carpets, curtains, sourcing furniture and antiques. All client contact is with Penny as she believes in working closely with the clients to meet their requirements, and all administration is headed by Nick Mills and his team. After 30 years in the business Penny has also amassed a satellite team – loved by her clients – from builders and architects to upholsterers and curtain makers. Penny Morrison Fabrics The creation of her own range of fabrics is a natural progression born out of her extensive experience in interior design; “In the past I had trouble finding curtain and upholstery designs that I really liked, so I have designed my own range of linens. It is a very pretty collection of what I call ‘floppy linens’ based on old Turkish embroidery patterns, as well as traditional Indian motifs, hand-printed on tight weave linen.” Integral to her signature style of ‘understated deep comfort’, her fabrics are hand-printed on natural linen. Any of these designs can also be produced as fabric-fiber wallpapers to order. The development of the fabric collection clearly adds another dimension to the interior design business, each creatively feeding into the other, accentuating Penny’s unmistakable style of simplified decadence. Penny designs all her own fabrics from her studio on the Welsh borders, based in a wing of the exquisite country house she renovated with her husband, and was subsequently featured in ‘The World of Interiors’. Her work, including the renovation of their London apartment as well as various projects for private clients, has been featured in various articles in ‘Homes and Gardens’ and ‘House and Garden’ magazines, and she has also featured in the House and Garden Top 100 Designers. |
